Which Master Will You Serve?

In Luke 16 Jesus gave me a powerful reminder: I must choose which master I’m going to serve. And so must you.

Jesus told a parable called the Parable of the Dishonest Manager to illustrate a profound point: that we must be careful with worldly resources and that if a person is not faithful in how they use worldly wealth they will certainly not be faithful with true riches in the Kingdom of God. At the end of the parable Jesus said this: “No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

In the end Jesus gives us an ultimatum: a person must choose whether they are going to worship God or money. We cannot do both. It really comes down to which we desire to pursue, I think. We can’t pursue both with equal devotion. To devote ourselves to the pursuit of money is to exclude ourselves from our pursuit of Jesus. The opposite is true as well. To devote ourselves to the pursuit of Jesus is to exclude ourselves from our pursuit of wealth. And of course, which we pursue the most is an expression of which we desire the most. If our pursuit of wealth is greater than our pursuit of Christ, based on Jesus’ words, it means we love money more than God. On the other hand, if we pursue Jesus more than we do wealth, it means we love Jesus more than money.

So, we are left with a choice: which shall we serve? Which shall we pursue the most? Which do we love supremely? For me and my house, we shall pursue Christ! Which will you serve?
