After Jesus triumphantly entered into Jerusalem Matthew 21:12-13 tells us that he “entered the temple and drove our all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigons. He said to them, ‘It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you make it a den of robbers.”
Was Jesus angry? Certainly. People were coming into Jerusalem for Passover from all over to worship in the temple and as they were entering there were money-changers and those who sold their pigeons taking advantage of the people. The money-changers were exchanging currency at crazy high rates and those who sold pigeons did so at insanely high prices.
But that’s not completely why Jesus was angry. He was angry because the temple was supposed to be the place people worshiped God. However, commercialism had entered into the house of God which in turn interrupted people from worshiping Almighty God. Jesus would have none of it! The point here is this: Anything that interrupts or interferes or prevents people from worshiping God must be ceased and removed.
